Background
Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil. Before the story begins he was one of the most feared devils in Hell, strong enough that human fear of him should have made him unkillable. The show does not tell us how he got to Earth or how he ended up dying on a riverbank the day a starving kid named Denji found him, because none of that is what Pochita is for. In the timeline we actually see, Pochita is the size of a small dog, runs on a pull cord, and is the only creature in the world who has ever loved Denji unconditionally.
He spends episode 1 in that form. He helps Denji hunt low rank devils, sleeps in a bag, eats Denji's own blood when food runs out, and listens to Denji talk about the future like it is a real place they might both get to see. When the yakuza betray Denji and kill him, Pochita merges with his ruined heart, makes a contract for the first time in his existence, and rebuilds Denji's body around himself. The condition of the contract is simple. Denji has to show him the normal life they talked about. In exchange Pochita becomes his heart, and Denji becomes Chainsaw Man.
He only speaks once, in a dream, at the moment of that contract. He is not visible for the rest of Season 1 because he is inside Denji's chest, but his presence is the entire reason Denji is alive at all, and the show keeps reminding you of that every time a chainsaw blade comes out.
